1. 4. How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Louisiana

Step 1: Schedule an appointment with a Louisiana-licensed physician. There is no fixed qualifying conditions list limit— any debilitating condition may be approved at the physician’s discretion.

Step 2: Your physician will issue a written recommendation, not a “card” in the traditional sense. This recommendation is sent directly to your chosen state-licensed dispensary.

Step 3: Once approved, you can purchase medical cannabis from one of Louisiana’s licensed dispensaries.

Note: Louisiana does not allow caregivers to register separately — the patient must be the purchaser, unless special legal arrangements are made.

Penalties include up to 1 year in jail (without eligibility for probation or parole) and a $1,000 fine.
  • Possession beyond your allowed limit or outside the medical program remains illegal and subject to Louisiana criminal law.
  • Distribution or sharing of your medicine is prohibited.
