Louisiana Medical Marijuana Law: Louisiana Medical Marijuana Card – Fast Online Certification | Medical Card Exam™
(Updated August 2025)
- Introduction
Louisiana’s medical cannabis program is fully operational and one of the most patient-accessible in the Deep South. After decades of false starts, the state now allows patients with a broad range of conditions to legally obtain cannabis in various forms — including raw flower for vaporization. As a physician, I want to ensure every Louisiana patient has a clear, trustworthy guide to what the law allows, how to qualify, and how to stay within the rules.

How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Louisiana
Step 1: Schedule an appointment with a Louisiana-licensed physician. There is no fixed qualifying conditions list limit— any debilitating condition may be approved at the physician’s discretion.
Step 2: Your physician will issue a written recommendation, not a “card” in the traditional sense. This recommendation is sent directly to your chosen state-licensed dispensary.
Step 3: Once approved, you can purchase medical cannabis from one of Louisiana’s licensed dispensaries.
Note: Louisiana does not allow caregivers to register separately — the patient must be the purchaser, unless special legal arrangements are made.
- Possession Limits & Cultivation Rules
- Flower: Up to 2.5 ounces (71 grams) every 14 days.
- Other forms: 30-day supply of oils, tinctures, capsules, liquids, dermal patches, metered-dose inhalers, and topicals.
