The District of Columbia has some of the most unique cannabis laws in the United States due to its status as a federal district. Cannabis is legal for both medical and recreational use, but with one important caveat — only medical cannabis can be purchased legally from licensed dispensaries. Recreational sales remain prohibited because Congress has blocked D.C. from using its budget to regulate them.

Adults may possess and grow limited amounts of cannabis for personal use, but gifting is the only legal way to transfer recreational cannabis. Medical patients benefit from higher possession limits, self-certification, and delivery options.
