Below, you’ll find exactly what the law says now, how it will work once implemented, and what limits and protections will be in place.

When the program launches, patients will qualify if diagnosed with one of these conditions:

• • Cancer
  • Chronic pain
  • Chronic nausea or vomiting
  • Epilepsy/seizure disorder
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Muscle spasms or spasticity
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Any other condition later approved by the Kentucky Center for Cannabis, based on scientific evidence of benefit

1. 4. How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Kentucky: Kentucky Medical Cannabis Card – Fast Online Evaluation | Medical Card Exam™

(Process will begin once the state opens patient registration.)

Step 1: Be evaluated by a Kentucky-licensed medical cannabis practitioner who will determine if you have a qualifying condition.

Step 2: Practitioner will provide a written certification specifying your allowed cannabis supply.

Step 3: Complete your patient registration through the Kentucky Medical Cannabis Program website.

Step 4: Once approved, you’ll receive your medical cannabis card to purchase from licensed dispensaries.

For caregivers: Allowed for patients who cannot manage their own care. Caregivers may purchase up to the patient’s prescribed amount during each 25-day period.

1. 5. Possession Limits & Cultivation Rules

• • Patients: Allowed up to a 30-day supply, as prescribed.
  • State default limits:
    
    • Flower: 112g per 30 days (3.75g for a 10-day supply)
    • Concentrates: 128g per 30 days (19.5g for a 10-day supply)
    • THC-infused products: 3,900mg THC per 30 days (1,300mg for a 10-day supply)
  • Topical (non-consumable) products: Not counted toward supply limits.
  • Home cultivation: Not allowed.

Practitioners may prescribe more than the standard limit if medically necessary for uninterrupted relief.

1. 6. Where You Can and Cannot Use Cannabis

• • Private residences, unless prohibited by property owner

❌ Prohibited:

• • Public spaces
  • Inside any motor vehicle
  • On school grounds
  • In workplaces that prohibit cannabis use
  • On federal property

Protections (future):

• • Registered patients and caregivers will be shielded from arrest or prosecution for possession and use within the law.

Limitations:

• • Employers are not required to allow cannabis use or possession at work.
  • Current law still penalizes all possession outside the program — until it is operational, any cannabis possession remains illegal.
